classification: abandoned place; arguably a non-place
a bit of history

fourth & sea fish & chips on fourth street in petaluma, california had been open for 19 years before its temporary closure in 2020 in response to the covid-19 pandemic. the storeowners are seeking a new location for reopening, which has left the original building on 101 4th st. sitting abandoned as of december 2021.

note

i pondered as to whether or not this place could be considered a non-place. After all, this abandoned place does not serve as an in-between for two places.
i could argue, however, that this building is a non-place because it is transitioning from its former identity as fourth & sea to its potential future location. perhaps this is a non-place in a non-traditional sense?

nostalgia

the loss of fourth & sea is emblematic of the damage the covid-19 pandemic has left on local/small businesses around the country. the ever-changing world has left individuals such as myself to personally fear endangerment; the endangerment of the places we've grown so used to changing.

liminality also plays into this. this phase of loss and change is liminal in the sense that we transitioning out of our pasts and into our futures. am i attempting to salvage this past through nostalgia in the form of documenting its abandoned state and existence?
